Laptop running quite satisfactorily in Vista last night was shut down at about midnight.

Booted up this evening and it came up in XP. I don't believe for one minute that we didnt do something, but I have no idea what. Its the wifes laptop, she hasnt installed anything, wouldnt know how and I dont give her those permissions, but that doesnt mean that she didnt select something on boot up. It has brought forward network connections, but has lost email profiles and files etc. Any ideas what happenned and how I can get back to Vista?? Maybe she just hit the wrong button during startup.

Wanted to install xp pro on a new gb hardrive. Before doing this contacted alienware support they said I need to change some bios settings but would not tell me what as they did not support second hand systems.

Posted by: sbrobbs 09 Oct Hi ED, Did try it it seemed to install fine until I came to update the drivers. I've never seen this before. I also tried to run a diagnostic program to tell me what was on my system but all it did was open a black window for a split second and then nothing but this worked fine on my desktop. Posted by: Raj 18 Oct Posted by: Barry 02 Dec I could not get XP to boot up and making that one change fixed my problem.

You da man! Posted by: Cat Cooter 11 Feb I havce Vista on a Dell inspiron and hate it. Nothing but issues. I have all my music stored on an external seagate drivce and can unplug it but will it still work right? We can also copy everything off my computer and save it to a harddrive to reinstall, pictures etc.

Will this work? FInal problem. I have a Seagate 1. It was working fine. I downloaded many anime full series on it and used it for back up then it quit doing the back ups. Next it said there was new software. After we installed the new software it totally screwed up my computer. It took my husband hours to get it working again, but the Seagate cannot be used. I think we need drivers? Is it possible to fix this or am I just screwed, and will trying to downgrade to xp make things worse?

I'm most concerned at this point about getting my big external running again. It's tricky even for tech savvy folks. At this point, I would check the Seagate website to get the latest Vista drivers for your device. Posted by: Garry 12 Apr Posted by: Ryan 20 Apr I'm trying to downgrade upgrade a dell from vista home basic to xp pro. The xp disk is original and is from another computer. The computer I'm trying to put xp on is a dell that a friend gave me.

His wife insisted that I wipe the hard drive right away but they didn't know where the original factory disks where. I figured it was no big deal and I would just over write everthing using the xp disk. Wednesday, September 26, PM. Anybody home???!!!???? Wednesday, October 3, PM. Come on Friday, October 19, PM. You obviously work for this lame company.. Why dont you go buy me a new operating system for It is lame that will offer it to a business to downgrade but not the individual user.

This operating system is pure trash and refuses to work with half of the hardware I install. Please dont be a moron and say something like, " Well you are not doing it right".

I have been in the IT industry for 15 years and work on comps 8 to 10 hours a day. This is just like every other system MS puts out. They design it then put it on the market for the users to work out the bugs and the kicker is.. Please MS Please let us who dont want to play your "fix it" game to downgrade for free.!!!!! Sunday, November 11, PM. I very much agree with this post by dafacct!!! Once again, I'm looking long and hard at the MAC. Maybe it's time to make the switch But please please please keep me in line for my cut of the upcoming class action suit. Saturday, November 17, AM. Tuesday, November 27, PM. Wednesday, November 28, AM. Okay, its pretty obvious people are peed off with vista but arguing who works for who doesnt solve the problems. This obviously means either wiping vista or partioning the drive to install XP.

Myself, I chose to wipe Vista My laptop came with vista, I didnt realise when ordering but thought I'd give it a try.. Problem is, with vista wiped and gone for ever,,, so are my drivers for HDD, audio, card reader and so on. I tried to install XP Pro but it keeps getting stuck at the same point, the hardware config Im assuming this is down to the drivers issue. I havent got a floppy option [ooh er] and cant get the drivers to reinstall [which I have on a disk supplied with the vista version]..

If anyone is reading this thinking of wiping vista Saturday, December 1, PM. Im in the pooh with re-installing vista Ive tried creating a system start up disk with XP with the SATA drivers added in using 'nlite' but I must be doing something wrong with the program Sunday, December 2, PM. I am willing to join. I just bought my Vista from Best Buy. Wanted XP, but told they don't sell them.

I am having major problems already. I have never seen such a rip-off in my life. I liked Windows 98 better than this junk. Nothing is working right, even when I don't touch the machine. I was just recently sent to Windows Genuine page by my machine and told I don't even have genuine windows, of which I do. I couldn't get to my desktop, my control panel, and had no bottom icons. I called tech. They were dumb as rocks, acted like they never heard of it.

I searched some forums and did what they said. Now I have a desktop, but can't install any windows update and windows defender doesn't work, screen saver doesn't work and I hardly even have any programs installed on my machine and it sometimes says I don't have the minimum required to perform this action.

I don't know a lot about computers, but I don't think I need to know a lot to already figure out that this is the WORST operating system ever invented. Tuesday, December 4, PM. Friday, December 7, AM. I now have XP on my laptop Saturday, January 12, AM. I'm all for a Class Action lawsuit! Even Windows 95, as crappy as it was didnt cause me the headaches that Vista has. And after 3 hours with the useless overseas Indian "support techs", I now get more errors than I started with!

Hell, I cant even connect to wireless routers! Microsoft should pay Dell in my case for instance to remove the crappy Vista and replace it with XP immediately! Vista is a rip-off.. Monday, February 18, PM. Oooo, that easy??? What about the driver files that are for Vista only? Nvidia GeForce Go comes to mind. As does Conexant High Definition audio. What people need to realize is just how underhanded MS was in the transition to Vista and the reason behind it.

Back when ME came out those who suffered, please relax, its just a history lesson , people like myself installed it only to have our systems crash continuously. ME died and all that money that MS invested died with it. They then told all the retail manufacturers HP, Dell, Gateway, etc This is why those manufacturers could no longer sell XP. In this way, Vista would be running on a great number of computers and therefore a great number of computers would be sending in bug reports so they could send out patches and SPs.

It took a threat by Dell to open MS eyes even just a little. Dell told MS that being forced to sell computers with a substandard OS was hurting their bottom line and in order to hedge the downturn, they would start selling systems with Linux. MS took a step back and realized that they were alienating one of the largest manufacturers of PCs. They recinded the order to revoke the OEM license but only for business users. I have an HP system that was bought with Vista on it. After a year of trudging thru with it.

I am downgrading to XP. I have a network in my home of 4 systems and the Vista system could not file share, printer share, or communicate with any of the other systems all XP. I am currently trying to find working drivers for the Conexant High Definition Audio device, Modem, and webcam.

Any help would be greatly appreciated my e-mail is ddzahn at gmail dot com. Tuesday, March 11, PM. Friday, March 14, PM. Do you try using Vista's Program Compatibility Wizard to install your programs? Hi Ronni, The bulk of the users are Vista home premium users. Ronni Pedersen wrote: Hi SegeSF, Downgrade rights in the Volume Licensing programs provide customers with the right to downgrade to any prior version of the same product.

Friday, March 28, PM. Heck ya, I feel ya dog. Doesnt microsoft know that dark brown slushy sellin ahabs are potentially terrorists? Sunday, March 30, PM. To add insult to injury we have Vista Home Basic, so essentially we are stuffed. I am going to shift him to linux at the first available opportunity.

See ya Microsoft! Class Action? I am in!! Monday, March 31, AM.
